20 Questions

July 2nd, 2007 by Rob James - Magician

When I am working I tend to get asked the same sort of questions all the time. How did you get started as a magician? How do you learn magic if it’s all so secret? Are you allowed in casinos? Can you make my wife/husband/work colleague/bill/mortgage/beer belly disappear? Can you help England win the World Cup? * [for witty riposte to this see below]

Last night as mentioned in a previous posting, I was at London ExCeL at an exhibition launch party and someone asked me something that I don’t think I have answered before… Where has being a magician taken me that I wouldn’t otherwise have gone?

Great question and it got me thinking. As a close up magician I have got to go to parties, events and places that I would never have attended and met people who I would not normally have met. I have driven my car through the electronic gates of some of the most amazing private homes in the country, gone into some of the most prestigious members clubs in London, got to visit both Oxford and Cambridge universities, in fact - I have been pretty much everywhere in the UK from Cornwall and Dover to North Wales and Inverness (twice!) I have performed at a cocktail party with the backdrop of the Burj al Arab in Dubai, done magic in a beach bar in Hurghada in Egypt and got to hang out with A list celebrities at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. These are of course, some cherry picked highlights from the last few years - I have always found it’s for the best on one’s website to gloss over the fact that as a magician with bills to pay I also happily accept bookings for 40th birthday parties in the function room of the local Harvester.

* - My answer: “I can work magic, but not miracles”
