Seeing some Familiar Faces
An interesting thing about being a close up magician is that whereas it is a very sociable job in as much as we get to attend an awful lot of parties, on the other hand it is also very antisocial as we have to work pretty much every weekend. Similarly, at the end of an event, everyone knows who I am but then I leave and it is highly likely I will see any of them again.
I do quite often bump into people who have seen me at other events. I guess if your social calendar is thriving then you are more likely to attend parties where entertainment is laid on and therefore more likely to see me or another table magician. This weekend I was at a wedding where two of the guests had hired me previously for their own wedding in 2005. I remember their wedding actually as I was trying out some new material before I went to the Magic Castle for the first time.
I am often working with other “ents” people at events who I have met before - caricaturists, silhouette artists, crazy waiters, DJs and the like. I think there is a hardcore of people who are out there working all the time so our paths cross fairly often. Although I don’t think I have ever seen the same DJ twice. DJs always also seem to run entertainment agencies that I have never heard of.
Yesterday I was working with the excellent caricaturist John Roberts who is from Knutsford in Cheshire. You can check out his website at Manchester Caricaturist. I first worked with him about 2002 I think.
Right, am going to sign off now. I am working this lunchtime in Birmingham performing close up and table magic for the staff of a college as it’s their end of term party. Should be good!
